La pensión de sobrevivientes constituye entonces uno de los mecanismos instituidos por el legislador para la consecución del objetivo de la seguridad social antes mencionado. En numerosas ocasiones, esta Corte ha sostenido que la finalidad esencial de la pensión de sobrevivientes es la protección de la familia como núcleo fundamental de la sociedad, de tal suerte que las personas que dependían económicamente del causante y quienes deben hacer frente a las contingencias derivadas de su muerte, puedan seguir atendiendo sus necesidades de subsistencia, sin que vean alterada la situación social y económica con que contaban en vida del pensionado o afiliado que falleció
